The English language, like all languages, has evolved over time. Old English(OE), developed from the germanic branch of Indo-European languages and was characterized by limited vocabulary with word endings that identified the gender, number and case of words.

모든 언어들처럼 영어도 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 진화해왔다. 고대 영어는 인도-유럽 언어의 게르만 언어의 한 줄기로부터 발전시켜왔고, 동일한 성을 지닌 단어끝부분과 숫자 그리고 몇단어종류들로 제한된 단어로 특성을 지녔다.

Middle English(ME) was distinguished by an influx of French words into the language, and the shift to more simplified word forms.

중세 영어는 불어 단어 유입과 보다 간단한 단어 형성유입으로 구별되었다.

Modern English featured a move toward standardization of the language by formalizing both usage and spelling.

중세 영어는 어법과 철자가 형성됨에 따라 언어의 표준화 경향을 가졌다.
